Review of the Samyang 24mm f2.8 AF e-mount

[vc_empty_space height=”50px”]

The brand new Samyang 24mm f2.8 af is finally here!
I’m so exited about it because I really liked the previous pancake 35mm for the the weight and the great quality, now it’s time to the 24mm to show us its performances.
The AF family lenses especially for Sony is now groing up, and that’s a good point seeing samyang putting a lot of effort in that field, after 50mm 1.4 / 14mm 2.8 / 35 (1.4 and 2.8).
They also made AF14mm 2.8 and the brand new AF85mm 1.4 for Canon camera (which I will review soon).

The following is from the Samyang Global website :

As the Samyang AF 35mm F2.8 FE has strengthened their position in the market, Samyang’s new full-frame Sony E-mount lens, the AF 24mm F2.8 FE, also allows to take a various type of photographs with its wide angle of view and short focal length of the lens. The improved autofocus system also provides more quiet and accurate autofocus performance. The compact and light-weight design offers the portability and comfort needed for a long day. This lens would be the best choice for daily photographers who want to capture everyday moments with a high-resolution. The Samyang AF 24mm F2.8 FE features the both a fast and accurate Auto Focus and the minimum focusing distance of 0.24m, it’s ideal for outdoor events and also close-up photos such as travel, sports
events, ,landscape, selfie, pet, portrait, food and etc.

• The lens is usable on Sony FE and E mount cameras only (full frame and aps-c)

• It is an Auto focus lens

• It has a f2.8 maximum aperture with an aperture range between f2.8 and f22

• It has 7 aperture blades for pleasing out of focus areas, nice bokeh.

• Front filter size of 49mm • Weight : 93g

The Samyang AF 24mm f2.8 FE is very light, it’s crazy to say that a lens like that weights only 93g!
It’s well made, minimalistic modern and looks fantastic match with the alpha Sony Cameras even in design and also the mirrorless format (having a light weight gear for better performance).

The lens body is made of a plastic but don’t feel cheap, I really like the build quality and the look of this lens and I think it’s a great step forward for Samyang to build lenses of this quality.

The Samyang AF 24mm f/2.8 FE lens has a small focus ring. There are no hard stops at the ends of the range, making it more difficult to set focus at infinity.

When it comes to auto-focusing, the Samyang AF 24mm f/2.8 FE is a fairly quick performer, taking about 0.25 seconds to lock onto the subject when mounted on the Sony A7R II that i tested it with.

I didn’t experience too much “hunting”, either in good or bad light, with the lens
accurately focusing almost all of the time. When it comes to video, the continus AF is very fast and quiet, it’s performing very well.

Chromatic Aberration is absent at the centre and still very well controlled at the edges. Even under the most arduous conditions CA will not be a problem

In the Samyang AF 24mm f/2.8 FE lens, Samyang employed an iris diaphragm with 7 rounded blades, which has resulted in quite nice bokeh. Thanks to the minimum focusing distance of 0.24m, it gives a smoothie bokeh, perfect for close up, food, portraits, travel.. etc

The Samyang FE 24mm ƒ/2.8 offers decent results for sharpness when used wide open, but there’s a great deal of improvement to be gained by stopping down. At ƒ/2.8, the picture is very sharp in the center. The lens does is better at ƒ/4 and reaches its peak sharpness at ƒ/5.6 – almost but not quite tack-sharp – where it remains until diffraction limiting starts to become a factor at ƒ/11. Sharpness is still good at ƒ/16, but degrades noticeably at the maximum aperture of ƒ/22.

The 24mm coasts only 299€ which is very affordable lens for its great performance, I think we can’t find something like that in the market.

The new Samyang AF 24mm f/2.8 FE is an affordable, yet high-quality, wide- versatile lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras.

In terms of image quality, sharpness is good when shooting wide-open at f/ 2.8, becoming even better from f/4 onwards, but the edges aren’t quite as sharp as the centre, with f/8-f/16 producing the sharpest results.
As with the 35mm lens, the build quality is again excellent, light weight and looks fantastic with Sony alpha series.
Auto-focusing is very quick on the A7R II that I tested the lens with, although we missed having manual focus over-ride at any time.

It’s perfect for street photography, food, blogger, close up, travel and so more, its weight and quality make it a must have in my backpack.
Also it’s great for video, AF tracking works very well and because of its 93g, we can mount it easily on a gimbal for better smoothness in motion.

The price of the Samyang AF 24mm f/2.8 FE is very attractive given the fast f/2.8 aperture, complex construction, and the quick and quiet auto-focusing, which makes this lens worthy of our Highly Recommended award.
